Today, KVIK posted a video of the Associated Students presidential debate from last week. Here’s a link.

The four candidates — Jamin Agosti, Ben Brockman, Anna Ellermeier and Byron Starkey — squared off in the Viking Union, where more than 350 students packed into the Multi-Purpose Room to hear them speak.

AS election week began today for all Board of Directors positions. To vote, click on the “elections” tab on myWestern. Friday is the last day to vote.

Gogol Bordello show cancelled due to death in family of band member

This info coming from the Associated Students, who have issued a press release. The popular gypsy-punk band was scheduled to play Friday, April 22 in the Viking Union.

At this point it appears the concert will not be rescheduled.

B-Hamff Film Festival seeks outdoor film submissions

The Associated Students Outdoor Center is hosting its first ever, student-run outdoor film festival on May 19.

The B-Hamff Film Festival, a knock off of the annual Banff Film Festival, is calling for local outdoor film submissions until May 6. The films will be judged by a panel, and the top films will be shown during the festival on May 19.

The Outdoor Center will provide prizes for winners, including a $300 cash prize for first place.

Associated Students mirrors nationwide gender gap in student government

Across the nation, the number of men who run for and win student government offices is much higher than it is for women, The Washington Post is reporting.

While women outnumber men at Western — making up 54 percent of graduates — they are outnumbered six to one on the Associated Students Board of Directors.

Of the seven AS Board positions, however, five had female candidates last year. It should be interesting to see what happens this year, as elections are right around the corner.

Insult to injury? As tuition rises, so may on-campus room and board

Students wanting to live and eat on campus next year may see a 4.5 percent increase in housing and dining costs for the 2011-12 academic year.

At the Associated Students Board of Directors meeting Wednesday, board members heard a proposal to increase residence hall and meal plan rates at least 3.75 percent, but no more than 4.5 percent.

Childcare program revamped, but at expense of low-income students?

The Associated Students Childhood Development Center will soon change its funding model to encourage full-time childcare. The new model forgoes a parent co-op model that had been in place.

The center is located near Fairhaven College and provides childcare for students, faculty and staff of Western.

Patricia Ashby, manager of the center, said this new funding model will generate more income — and at more predictable rates.

Destination: Washington D.C. for three AS Board members, president

Three members of the AS Board of Directors will be traveling to Washington D.C. during dead week, March 7-10, to lobby on behalf of Western and higher education.

“We are trying to schedule meetings with every Washington state representative and senator,” said Byron Starkey, AS Vice President for Government Affairs.

Outback Farm may get new outdoor classroom

That rickety old pavilion outside the Outback (the garden/farm just south of Fairhaven College) could soon be replaced by something a little less, uh, kitschy. Or, as Outback coordinator Nick Spring describes it, “haphazardly constructed with recycled materials.”

It looks like this is moving right ahead, since they’ve already got basic blueprints drawn up. To see them, check out the last few pages of this document. (more…)
