Pasco as a guide for rental inspections

If Bellingham officials are planning to require rental inspections anytime soon, perhaps Pasco would be a good role model.

Dick Conoboy, Bellingham’s resident expert on rental licensing, posted on his blog recently that the central Washington city was able to have all of its 6,000 rental units (apartments, homes, etc.) inspected over the course of two years — using only one inspector.

Conoboy estimates that with two inspectors, Bellingham could do the same in about three years.

Update on the red light camera situation

The Bellingham Herald’s Jared Paben has been busy covering the traffic light camera story in the past two days, posting both an article on it and a couple of blog posts.

The gist is that a group of Bellingham voters are planning to put an initiative on the ballot that would repeal the recently approved cameras. The group includes prolific initiative-backer Tim Eyman, something that Mayor Dan Pike is “disappointed” in.

Pike said the lights will still be installed by April, despite some slight delays, and the council will consider whether to keep the lights within about a year.
