New UW president says he would be OK with less pay than predecessor

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

Michael Young, the soon-to-be president of the University of Washington, told UW officials today that he would be willing to accept a smaller paycheck than predecessor Mark Emmert, who left to become president of the NCAA, the Seattle Times is reporting.

The statement was made during Young’s public introduction at UW’s campus. The Times has been embracing Seattle’s honeymoon with Young, publishing an editorial that praised the new president as a “spectacular get” for UW.

Shepard delivers Oval Office-ish address on the budget

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

President Bruce Shepard released a video yesterday in light of this week’s board of trustees meeting and the budget situation in Olympia.

The president outlines what might happen if the new norm for state funding at Western holds steady at approximately $6 and a pack of gum.

Basically our options are to become more elitist, by rejecting students who deserve to get in, or more mediocre, he says.

It’s a somewhat grim address, as Shepard points out that funding for higher education is “falling off a cliff.” It’s also an address full of abstractions: priorities for the future, spending vs. revenue, “waving a white flag,” and rebasing (the title word of the video).

Shepard: New $35 million cut would be equal to losing Woodring, Huxley and Fairhaven

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Brianna Gibbs // THE WESTERN FRONT

Three public universities in Washington sent letters to Olympia and The Seattle Times this week in an effort to sway lawmakers away from proposed budget cuts to higher education.

Western, the University of Washington and Washington State University each outlined what proposed budget cuts could mean.

Gov. Chris Gregoire proposed a $35 million cut to Western’s operating budget, and President Bruce Shepard responded to that figure with some possible impacts it could have on our university.

The Bruce Files: Redactions and reactions

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

You could call this post a kind of miniature, Bizarro World version of WikiLeaks.

It’s also a huge entry, but hopefully you find the topic as fascinating as I do.

Of the 55 e-mails sent by President Bruce Shepard that I obtained in a public records request, nine were almost entirely redacted, or censored.

These redacted e-mails are revealing precisely because of what they leave hidden from public scrutiny. This might be a good time to debate whether all e-mails by university employees should be available to the public, and I encourage that kind of debate in the comments section.

Here, I’m going to show what these redacted documents actually look like, and then do a little speculation about what they might contain. No conspiracy theories, just what seems likely, with the few hints they give us.

Some ‘reader friendly’ background on the budget situation

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

A Board of Trustees meeting is happening right now, so here’s a handy breakdown of the budget situation, issued by President Bruce Shepard and written in plainer English than usual.

About a month ago, Shepard said in a blog post that he would be giving a presentation about how damaging the cuts have been, even though a recent audit suggested that, in terms of finances, “we would seem to be doing OK.”

Just so we’re clear, on a blog that has mostly blogged about Shepard lately, I’m now blogging about what Shepard blogged about on his blog.

The Bruce Files: Another e-mail account checks in, checks out

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

This next e-mail is a tricky one, the one that sparked this issue’s Frontline.

The entire conversation is barely two paragraphs long. But on first read, I thought we were about to break a big story.

Read the e-mail in pdf form here.

The Bruce Files: ‘I would expect better from a Western student.’

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

Here’s a short, snappy exchange between President Bruce Shepard and a psychology major.

In September, when a $3 million cut led to the elimination of 14 low-enrollment majors, one student decided to go straight to the top, demanding to know whether she would be affected. (The majors to be cut had already been posted elsewhere: in newspapers, on the university website, etc.)

Shepard obliged, even adding a personal note.

The Bruce Files: Preparing for cuts, talking points delivered to Board of Trustees

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

Here we have an e-mail Shepard sent to Board of Trustees members on Sept. 16, the same day that an additional $3 million cut was announced to the university.

It is an explicit example of the president offering talking points to board members.

In one of the more fascinating points, Shepard hints at how out-of-state students will be recruited more heavily in the short term because they rake in more revenue for the university — a confession that admissions officials were careful to avoid in December.

The Bruce Files: State representative urges president to save music library

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

This will be the first in a series of posts about e-mails sent by President Bruce Shepard in the past year. The e-mails were obtained in a public records request that I blogged about last week.

I’ll try to post a new one every weekday.

So here we go.

In October, as Western officials were debating whether to move the music library into the main library building, Shepard received an e-mail from State Rep. Mary Helen Roberts, D-Lynnwood.
