Cocaine bust uncovers 72 pounds of cocaine, worth $1 million

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office confiscated 72 pounds of cocaine after arresting a Canadian citizen on March 4, The Bellingham Herald is reporting.

Narcyz Urbanski, 59, of Surrey, British Columbia, was traveling north on Interstate 5 when a sheriff’s deputy stopped him. The deputy noticed Urbanski was acting suspicious, and called in for a drug-sniffing dog.

The dog detected drugs inside the vehicle, and Urbanski was arrested upon discovery of the cocaine, worth $1 million. He was charged in Whatcom County Superior Court on Monday.

Border Patrol draws criticism at public meeting, offers more transparency

Two branches of Customs and Border Protection were criticized last week during a public meeting held in Blaine, The Northern Light reported.

An audience of about 200 listened to Border Patrol and Office of Air and Marine agents address public concerns from people who live near the Canadian border on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Many concerns were raised about Border Patrol presence on private property, low-flying helicopters and, of course, the Wayne Groen case.

Western begins research on border crossing times in Blaine

Western will begin research Tuesday, Feb. 22, on wait times at the Canadian border, KGMI is reporting.

The Border Policy Research Institute at Western has received $49,000 from the Washington State Department of Transportation to collect and analyze information on wait times at the border.

The project will examine alternative uses of the Free and Secure Trade truck lane for public use, with the hope that delays will be significantly shorter.

Highway pursuit at Canadian border ends in early morning crash

A vehicle jumped the border just after 4 a.m. Friday morning and fled south on I-5, KGMI is reporting.

Bellingham police officers issued a felony traffic stop when the vehicle was chased down at 4:16 a.m. near Sunset Drive.

The early morning chase ended in a crash, KGMI reports.

Injuries or the nature of the pursuit are not available at this time.
