A second, 7.4-magnitude quake rocks Japan

A 7.4-magnitude quake shook Japan at 11:32 p.m. local time April 6. The quake caused power shortages across the northern part of the country, the Associated Press is reporting.

The latest quake comes just shy of a month after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the northeastern coast March 11.

Exchange student who was missing in Japan has been found

Mastataka Sugasawa, a Western exchange student in Japan who had not contacted friends in Bellingham since Friday, held a brief but relieving conversation with his girlfriend via Skype this weekend, KIRO 7 is reporting.

From what I gather, it appears that Sugasawa studied at Western for several months before returning home to Tokyo. He was in another prefecture (or jurisdiction) when the tsunami hit.

I’ll try to confirm that when I get a chance.

Western alumnus teaching near Tokyo: ‘A sad time for me and for Japan’

Among those who witnessed the tsunami in Japan firsthand was Western alumnus Scott LaMont, who has seen his share of small earthquakes in the five years since he moved there.

None were as catastrophic as the one that has dominated headlines around the world lately.

LaMont was teaching English at a private school 45 minutes from Tokyo when the 8.9-magnitude quake struck, and he offered this detailed account to University Communications about what he has experienced so far.

Provost: At time of tsunami, 11 Western students were studying abroad in Japan; almost all have been contacted

Just received a campus-wide message sent by Provost Catherine Riordan regarding the earthquake and tsunami that has left hundreds dead in Japan.

In it, she says 11 Western students were in Japan at the time of the disaster, and 10 of them have been accounted for, while “efforts are under way to reach the last student,” who was not in an area directly impacted by the tsunami.

In Bellingham, wave swells from massive earthquake may be felt — barely

Bellingham is not expecting a significant threat from the tsunami generated from Thursday night’s 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan.

The City of Bellingham is expecting wave heights of only up to one foot today in Bellingham Bay.

A tsunami advisory does remain in effect for the entire Washington coast, as well as Strait of Juan De Fuca, Admiralty Inlet and the San Juan Islands.
