Mastataka Sugasawa, a Western exchange student in Japan who had not contacted friends in Bellingham since Friday, held a brief but relieving conversation with his girlfriend via Skype this weekend, KIRO 7 is reporting.

From what I gather, it appears that Sugasawa studied at Western for several months before returning home to Tokyo. He was in another prefecture (or jurisdiction) when the tsunami hit.

I’ll try to confirm that when I get a chance.

Sign scribbler pursued, but likely not viable suspect, police say

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

The online story posted early this morning about a man who scribbled “Down Town / Murdered / Dead / Stabed /17 times / RiP / Brother / God Bless” [sic] onto a missing person sign for freshman Dwight A. Clark has been updated with this new information:

The man who scribbled startling words onto a Dwight A. Clark missing person sign Tuesday evening is likely not a viable suspect, police say.

“I doubt very seriously this will lead anywhere,” Bellingham police spokesperson Mark Young said. “It was most likely somebody trying to be hurtful.”

Young said detectives are following a plethora of leads and tips, and will continue to search for the man who wrote: “Down Town / Murdered / Dead / Stabed /17 times / RiP / Brother / God Bless” [sic] on the flyer but only to ask why he would write it.

If the message were true, Young said, there would be a lot more evidence downtown of a stabbing, especially as the one described.

Young said there are no other substantial developments in the case, but phone calls continue to pour into the police station with people giving tips to investigators.

“We’re hopeful that one of these times we will come up with something significant,” Young said.

The reward pledge fund set up by the university, in cooperation with the Bellingham Police Department, has nearly $22,000 for anyone who comes forward with information leading to an arrest.
