Party bus on patrol this weekend? Police spokesman unsure

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Evan Stagliano // THE WESTERN FRONT

Today I called Bellingham Police Spokesman Mark Young on a tip from the Carver Gymnasium reader board, which said the party bus would be back on patrol this spring.

Young said he did not know if the “command vehicles” (read: party bus) would be in use by the Bellingham Police this weekend, but he did say that active patrols are always in force. He also said he was unaware of the message and that it was probably and old one.

Brianna Gibbs // THE WESTERN FRONT

A good friend once told me she went to college to major in beer and boys. Little did either of us know that, one day, at least one of those majors would actually be possible.

Central Washington University is now offering a 16-credit beer brewing certificate program, the Yakima Herald-Republic is reporting.

Another update on party patrols

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

I spoke briefly with Bellingham Police spokesman Mark Young this afternoon, and he said that the party emphasis patrols are not in effect right now, contrary to what the electronic billboard in front of Carver Gym says.

The exact quote: “It’s probably outdated.”

Updated: Party patrols returning?

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

According to the giant electronic billboard in front of Carver Gym, yes.

There are really only three options here: (a) It’s correct, (b) it’s outdated, or (c) somebody made a typo and it should have read “Party patrols are not returning.”

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to call the police station and confirm this, because I walked by Carver pretty late this evening.

I should have confirmation in time for Tuesday’s issue.

So be on the lookout. Maybe in more ways than one.

Update, 1 p.m. Saturday: Bellingham Police logs suggest that the party patrols are not out this weekend. It appears police only responded to one loud party last night and did not issue any minor in possession citations.

Sometimes events get posted late, however, and maybe there just weren’t any parties to bust. (On a Friday? In Bellingham?)

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

Man, three days straight of working on the party bus story really took it out of me. So, in the spirit of the season, here’s a quick look back at the more than 200 alcohol-related arrests made by Bellingham and University Police during the past three weekends.

Bellingham Police give out about 45 MIPs Friday night

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

Caleb Hutton // THE WESTERN FRONT

Just got back from a ride-along with the Bellingham Police — with a seat in the cab of the Mobile Command Vehicle, also known as the Tactical Operations Center, also known as the ‘party bus.’

About 40 minor in possession citations were issued at the two busted parties we witnessed.

For the full story, see Tuesday’s issue. It should be a good one.
