Occupy Bellingham draws hundreds

Hundreds of people flooded downtown Bellingham this afternoon as part of Occupy Bellingham, modeled after the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City. The Bellingham protests started at 4 p.m. today, and within half an hour, about 450 people were marching between the Bellingham Federal Building and Bank of America. Red light cameras challenged by Kitsap County man

Not Bellingham news, per se, but if we’re going to look into the future of this city’s red light camera saga, here’s what might have in store.

Soon after Sky Steimle, a Port Orchard man, ran a red light in Kitsap County, he found out that it was going to cost him.

From the Kitsap Sun:

But instead of paying his $124 ticket to the city of Bremerton, Steimle has contested the citation and appealed an earlier Bremerton Municipal Court decision. So far, it’s cost him $520 in fees to fight the ticket.

Steimle doesn’t deny running the red light. But he questions the legality of the city’s photo enforcement system, calling it “corrupt and fraudulent.”

Road closures near Western, on Ellis and East Holly streets, April 4 and 5

City water crews will be replacing a broken water valve at the intersection of Ellis and East Holly streets on April 4 and 5. The right lane of East Holly from Ellis to Indian streets will be closed.

People driving to Western should reroute if coming from north campus, or come from the south via Bill McDonald Parkway.

Man Pies surprise: van crashes through restaurant’s wall

It was just another day at work for employees of Man Pies — until a van crashed into the kitchen.

On Friday morning, Everson resident Wilma Johnston, 74, was apparently backing out of a spot in a parking garage, and accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brake.

The quick slip of the foot sent her straight through the kitchen wall of Man Pies, a downtown restaurant, The Bellingham Herald is reporting.

Western begins research on border crossing times in Blaine

Western will begin research Tuesday, Feb. 22, on wait times at the Canadian border, KGMI is reporting.

The Border Policy Research Institute at Western has received $49,000 from the Washington State Department of Transportation to collect and analyze information on wait times at the border.

The project will examine alternative uses of the Free and Secure Trade truck lane for public use, with the hope that delays will be significantly shorter.
