UW students arrested protesting ethics of Sodexo

Twenty-five students at the University of Washington were arrested Wednesday during a sit-in protesting the ethics of Sodexo, the Seattle Times is reporting.

The company, which runs many of the campus dining options both at UW and Western, has been accused of violating workers’ rights in the past, although Sodexo officials deny those allegations.

New UW president says he would be OK with less pay than predecessor

Michael Young, the soon-to-be president of the University of Washington, told UW officials today that he would be willing to accept a smaller paycheck than predecessor Mark Emmert, who left to become president of the NCAA, the Seattle Times is reporting.

The statement was made during Young’s public introduction at UW’s campus. The Times has been embracing Seattle’s honeymoon with Young, publishing an editorial that praised the new president as a “spectacular get” for UW.

What the Seattle Times has to say about tuition increases

As our front page story pointed out today, cuts in state funding have left students with a larger chunk of the bill to keep public universities running (and at less than full steam).

The Seattle Times posted their own story on the subject this evening, putting the tuition increases in broader context, and mapping out the possible long-term effects of increases.

P-I: College education increasingly out of reach

The front-page story on SeattlePI.com right now is a five-page (!) article on dwindling public support for higher education in Washington, and, by extension, the west coast.

It’s a comprehensive piece that gives a fuller context to the catch-22 this generation is caught in: It takes a college education to get a job that pays good wages, but to afford a college education, you’d need a job that pays good wages.

It also takes a good look at why the University of Washington and other colleges are recruiting more out-of-state students.

Snowboarder killed by avalanche was UW student; warnings issued in North Cascades

A student attending the University of Washington was identified as the snowboarder killed in an avalanche Sunday at Stevens Pass, the Associated Press is reporting.

Riley McCarthy, 20, was a sophomore in pre-engineering studies, university spokesman Bob Roseth told the AP.

Shepard: New $35 million cut would be equal to losing Woodring, Huxley and Fairhaven

Three public universities in Washington sent letters to Olympia and The Seattle Times this week in an effort to sway lawmakers away from proposed budget cuts to higher education.

Western, the University of Washington and Washington State University each outlined what proposed budget cuts could mean.

Gov. Chris Gregoire proposed a $35 million cut to Western’s operating budget, and President Bruce Shepard responded to that figure with some possible impacts it could have on our university.
