Spring is fast approaching, which means baseball season is right around the corner. The Mariners are a few weeks into spring training, looking to improve on their last-place finish in the A.L. West in 2011.
Unfortunately, the Mariners are in a difficult division that has gotten even tougher in the offseason.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, thanks to offseason acquisitions Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson, and the two-time reigning American League Champion Texas Rangers are expected to battle for the division title.
After the top two teams, there should be a significant drop-off to the Mariners and A’s.
According to the blog Counting Baseballs, the Mariners are projected to finish third, followed by Oakland.
But baseball is unpredictable, so there is no way to tell how the division will look at the end of the season.
You can see Counting Baseball’s full AL West preview, as well as previews other divisions here.
The Mariner’s 2012 season opens on Friday, April 6 in Oakland. They will play the first game of the year at Safeco Field on Friday, April 13.
